by nicety of dress, care of his shoes, display of finger rings, and a dudish cut of his hair. Contemporaries speak of Plato with admiration for his intellect and reverence for the beauty of his character, which was “elevated in Olympian cheerfulness above the world of change and decay.”
In our purpose to touch upon some points of Plato’s doctrines, we are treating of a transcendent genius whose work has profoundly affected the thought of the world. Platonism reappears as Neo-Platonism in the second and third centuries of our era; is largely adopted in its new form a century later by St. Augustine, the great expounder of Christianity and teacher of the Middle Ages; arises again in the seventeenth century proclaiming that moral law is written in fixed characters in every rational mind; culminates in the grand idealism of Schelling and Hegel; is transmitted to-day in the magnificent idealistic ethics of such men as Caird, Green, and Bradley; gives the cardinal virtues to Christianity; furnishes a broad and inspiring ethical code for the present; speaks with an inspiration that largely meets the approval of the Christian world; inspired the Utopia and the New Atlantis and all ideal schemes of government and society; was, following Socrates, the father of the inductive method; became the starting point for the scientific study of nature and psychology in the eleventh century; was a large element in the humanistic movement, which at the close of the middle ages created modern natural science; created conceptions which, developing down through the centuries in two diverging lines, indirectly found highest expression in the idealism of Hegel and the evolution of Spencer, and is likely to furnish in broad outlines, especially as presented by Aristotle, ground for the reconciliation of the opposite poles of philosophy in a spiritual evolution.
What was Plato’s central idea? It was the existence of fixed principles in the universe, principles realized in the consciousness of man, through pursuit of knowledge. Socrates aimed at a permanent ground for ethical wisdom in a time when the old foundations of conduct and of divine and human law were shaken. He was the progenitor of the inductive method, in that he sought in numerous instances and opinions the essential common ground or principle, and aimed at exact definition. The class concept, general notion, universal truth, was the object of his search. And we find him, for instance, in Plato, tracing through the ten books of the “Republic” the essential character of justice. Plato, following Socrates, sought a foundation for ethical conceptions in a metaphysical theory, the Doctrine of Ideas, a magnificent illustration of the truth that speculative philosophy grows out of man’s earnest desire to know why he is here, and what is the meaning of his moral nature.
It will help much any view in the field of philosophy to keep uppermost the thought of distinct classes, types, or kinds of things in nature; the thought of the corresponding class concepts, general notions or universals in the human mind; and the thought of original ideas in the mind of God, as constituting principles or laws or modes of action in nature. This is not a world of chaotic chance, it is a world of rational and progressive order, and we are compelled to seek for the architecture an architect and a plan embodying rational ideas. Plato’s ideas are eternal entities existing neither in nature nor in the mind of God, but nevertheless the archetypes, forms, or patterns after which every kind of things to which may be applied a common name was fashioned. Plato here held in an imperfect way the mighty truth of all philosophy, and the “Ideas” have reappeared in many guises,—as the forms or essences of Aristotle, existing only as realized in nature, as ideas in the mind of God, as the self-evolving categories of Hegel, as the perfecting principle and the fashioning laws in the doctrine of evolution.
James H. Baker, president of the University of Colorado and former principal of the Denver High School, opens his 1900 collection with a preface that functions as a compressed manifesto. He organizes the papers into two groups—those on education proper and those under the broader title “Education and Life”—and immediately lists a series of propositions that recur throughout the volume. Among them: education must be brought “in closer touch with the work and the problems of to-day”; the social aim of citizenship deserves more prominence; and the entire span from first grade to college graduation should be shortened. Baker also warns against misreading doctrines of pleasure, inclination, and “following lines of least resistance,” and he insists that evolution and modern psychology are converging on a “safe philosophy for school and life.”
A Preface That Reads Like a Syllabus
The preface is not a mere courtesy; it is a dense summary of the book’s core arguments. Baker states that “each field of knowledge has its own peculiar value” and that the choice of studies during general training is not indifferent—a direct challenge to the elective system then gaining ground. He also claims that “studies belonging to a given period are also good preparation for higher grades of work,” a view he says colleges should consider more fully. The preface closes with a striking assertion: that some of the best principles of teaching and rules of life appear in literature “which does not rank as scientific” but contains “half-conscious, incidental expression of deep insight into human nature.” This remark signals Baker’s willingness to draw on poets and essayists, not only psychologists and administrators.
The Professional School as a Test Case
One of the later excerpts, a paper read before the National Association of City Superintendents in 1896, focuses on legal education. Baker quotes a U.S. Bureau of Education report that contrasts Continental Europe—where universities are “professional schools for the four learned professions”—with England and America, where colleges are “chiefly schools for general culture.” The report argues that no one needs “the power of general education to grasp all the facts relating to a subject” more than the lawyer, and no one needs “an acquaintance with psychology and philosophy” more than the physician. Baker endorses this view, adding that the ethical quality of “the noble and honorable gentleman” is essential. The passage reveals his conviction that professional training must rest on a broad liberal foundation, and that the university’s role is to enforce that sequence.
Shortening the Educational Ladder
Throughout the excerpts, Baker returns to the problem of time. The preface declares that “the entire time between the first grade and college graduation must be shortened,” and the legal-education excerpt notes that only a few universities have a plan for shortening “the period of college and professional study.” A footnote from 1900 reports progress: “standard universities now require at least a high-school education for admission to professional schools, and offer four years in medicine and three years in law.” Baker does not propose a specific curriculum, but he consistently advocates for efficiency without sacrificing breadth. His concern is practical: if education takes too long, it becomes inaccessible to many, and the connection to “life” weakens.
The Heroic, Ethical, and Aesthetic as Educational Aims
In the preface, Baker lists “the heroic, ethical, and æsthetic elements of character” as “of prime importance.” This triad appears without elaboration in the excerpts, but it suggests that Baker’s vision of education is not merely utilitarian. He wants schools to cultivate courage, moral judgment, and a sense of beauty—qualities that resist measurement. Later, he links this to a broader philosophical claim: “For our view of life and for our theory of education, we are to interpret evolution” in a way that preserves these ideals. The excerpts do not show how he develops this argument, but the preface’s reference to “fresh hope for both romance and practical philosophy” hints at a synthesis between scientific progress and humanistic values.
Baker’s book is best approached as a series of occasional pieces that together argue for a coherent reform agenda. Readers should note the dates and occasions of each paper, since Baker often responds to specific committee reports or conference debates. The footnotes, especially those tracking changes between 1896 and 1900, provide a running commentary on how quickly educational institutions were evolving. Because the excerpts are incomplete, the full development of Baker’s views on psychology, evolution, and the “doctrine of happiness through work” remains to be discovered in the complete text.
